    Church at Lydia’s House

‘What makes a church a church?’   As a faithful missionary for Christ,  the Apostle Paul started at church in Lydia’s home in Philippi. It was a place of welcome, love and understanding.  How can we grow to be more of a church like that?

    His Strength Is Perfect

Using the story of  The Stoning of Stephen as a backdrop,  this sermon we will take a serious look at our own depth of faith and conviction,  seeking to realize that with our lives strongly anchored in Christ, we can accomplish great things for God’s Kingdom both as individual Christians and as the Church.

    From Bordeom to Boldness

Peter and John are brought before the same Jewish Council that condemned Jesus to death.  They are charged with blasphemy and asked to explain by what power  they healed the lame man  at the temple gate. Peter’s response is that  of a man empowered by the Living Christ.  As the Church in touch with Christ, we are to be people of Courage, Compassion, and Conviction!

    An After Pentecost Grammar Lesson

This first sermon of this series called:  “Living Like Jesus:  What It Means to Be The Church”  is a  follow-up  of the sermon  preached on May 10th,   focusing  again on having  faith  IN THE NAME  of Jesus.  There is power and life, forgiveness and hope  in that name.  Real faith is not believing  ABOUT Jesus but  believing  IN  Jesus….in His Name!

    Altogether Together

Can you be a Christian by yourself?  No.  There is no such thing as  a “Lone Ranger”  Christian. A crucial part of what it means to ‘believe in Jesus” is to commit one’s life to being  altogether together,  to being part of the “community”  of faith.

    What’s in a Name?

It’s not until we learn to love in a truly distinctive way that we really begin to follow Jesus.  What is that truly distinctive way of love?  1 John tells us it is to “Believe in the NAME of Jesus Christ,  and to love one another.”

    What About the Children?

Sometimes it is amazing how children will think and ponder about an issueor a question that has them perplexed. Perhaps we can learn from that. Our scripture from the very first Psalm (Psalm 1) urges us to  “meditate”  or “think” on the things of God because when we do,  the scripture goes on to tell us, we become  “like a tree planted by streams of water, that yields its fruit in season, and it’s leaves do not wither.”

    Becoming Followers Who Follow

In today’s scripture,  Jesus says, “My sheep listen to my voice; I know them and they follow me.”  If we are serious about being  followers  of Jesus  who really follow, then….we must become a community of faith that is not afraid to think and ask questions, and explore doubt, and experiment with faithful living. Sheep follow their Shepherd,  and our Shepherd leads us into depths of life we’ve never experienced before.

    See There!

Easter is about the resurrection of Christ.  On that we all agree.  However, according to the Gospel writers,  Easter is about what the disciples SAW  when the risen Christ appeared to them.  What do you  think would happen if we as a church dedicated itself to helping people SEE the risen Christ at work in this world?  In us?  After all, isn’t that really what Easter is all about?  Working toward the  day when “every eye will see him!”
