I have included some discussion questions below, some of which we asked together, and some we did not, that relate to each of the 5 rungs. Feel free to use them as a springboard discussion starter at home.

Rung 1:God has many ways of speaking to us,
including our dreams and imagination.

• What are some of the ways God speaks to people?
• Is it easy or hard for you to hear God’s voice?
• What gets in the way of hearing God?
• Have you ever received a message from God through a dream or daydream?

Rung 2: God can use any of us.

• Who are other unlikely people who were used by God to do good things?
• If God sent out a casting call for “Young Christian seeker with good heart willing to work hard” would you go out for the part? Would you get a callback for the audition?
• What gifts do you have that God might use?

Rung 3: In times of trouble, God is close.

• Tell of a hard time in your life when you suddenly realized that “Surely the Lord is in this place, and I was not aware of it.”
• Do you think that we are more or less receptive to God when we are feeling low?
• If a friend of yours was in trouble, would you offer God as part of the solution to his or her problems?

Rung 4: God wants to be in relationship with us.

• If God sent you an invitation, what would it say? How would you RSVP?
• Why might someone draw back and refuse the offered relationship with God?
• What does God offer us from a personal relationship with God? What can we offer God?

Rung 5: +Any place can be sacred space.

• Name some famous sacred spaces around the world.
• Where is it easiest for you to experience God? Why?
• Are there special places that remind you of God? Do you make time to be there?
